Sitting on hold…
I really wanted to have more news about the move but right now everything is on hold. The landlord has work they are contractually obligated to complete before we can start our work and unfortunately there have been several setbacks. About which they are being close lipped. What I’ve been able to piece together is that they discovered a leak under the existing water heater that has caused damage to the ceiling in one of the bathrooms and the dish washing area as well as the floor in the office. I do not know if the leak is in the water heater itself, what the extent of the damage is, or if the heater will need to be replaced. I don’t know what, if any, of the work will become my responsibility to fix or replace. I don’t know if this is going to destroy our very thin budget for construction. It’s all very stressful.
What’s not stressful is all the excitement and interest you all show in this move and the build project. I love how eager you all are for details. It helps remind me that Distant Worlds isn’t really a coffeehouse, it’s a community space that pays the rent by selling coffee. Every time the store is filled with people laughing and having a good time, every study session where students are supporting each other’s learning, every business meeting, every quiet conversation is another reminder of how we serve our community.
The new location is going to happen. It better, I’ve already given them a BUNCH of money and signed a lease and everything. But I love the things we’ve bult in our current location. We haven’t fully returned to the super late night hours, but we are starting to see more evening and weekend groups making use of the store. The sound of the store full of voices and joy was the thing I missed the most when we had to be take-out only.
So while we don’t have any details to share, we’re just going to bask in the feeling of home that we’ve already built up here.
